Hi! This is Catherine Smith with Barksdale Ballard and I'm the Director of Outreach for On Our Own Terms. One of the challenges of this campaign is finding out what's going on and where. If you have formed an On Our Own Terms steering committee in your community, please let us and others know of your activities by posting them here. If you haven't yet formed one and would like to do so, contact your local public television station or write moyersoutreach@bballard.com. Thanks so much. We look forward to sharing thoughts, ideas and experiences with you! Catherine |

Lemmon, SD: A group of people are starting a new Hospice in Nothwestern SD and Southwestern ND called Dakota Prairie Hospice. This group will be using the 4 part series to engage the community in talking about EOL issues. The contact person in Lemmon, SD is Ann Riedy. SD public Broadcasting will show the 4 part series and the video training session will be at 11am at the Lemmon High School. Any ideas for us to engage the public of this very rural area, is welcomed. This is a very elderly population and death is all around us, but no one talks about death or good end of life care. |

Catherine, We are active in South Dakota! Yes, getting the word out is difficult. The Chiesman Foundation's sole mission is get people involved in civic life. Some of our projects hold public forums which is one of the components of the Moyers and ALA effort. We want to help the public understand this issue and clarify their own feelings through using At Death's Door: What Are the Choices? forums. Let me know what we can do. I attended the satellite training and Elaine Larson with SDPTV is our contact.

Jeanmarie: I'm glad to hear that you're involved in your area and South Dakota. Thanks for the information! Any chance that you can hook up with SWilford and his/her group to organize some public forums - perhaps Town Hall meetings with elected officials or discussions in churches? You can reply directly to his/her posting right here on the Discussion Board. Meanwhile, I'd also recommend that you look at the Leadership Guide (available on this web site) for ideas and print out the list of Outreach Associates from the "Read on Line" version of the Guide. The Outreach Associates are national membership organizations which have been promoting the series and local involvement througout their membership. Good luck in your efforts and please keep us "posted!" Catherine

Swilford, Sorry to keep referring to you as him/her, but that's one of the drawbacks of email addresses! Just wanted to let you know that I've recommended to Jeanmarie that she hook up with you. I also wanted to let you know that I've given some thought as to how to broach the subject within your community. I grew up in rural Pennsylvania and as I think back on my life and where we would congregate, I can think of two places: the churches and the schools. My recommendation to you would be to take a look at the Leadership Guide (available on this website) and review some of the activities which can involve the faith community. We've had a marvellous response from religious leaders, chaplains, and faith in action. You may also be able to use the schools as a location for public gatherings (such as town hall meetings with local officials) or seminars on caregiving and how the community can help. Good luck in your efforts. Hope you and Jeanmarie can hook up and help eachother out. Please keep us "posted!" Catherine |

Thank you for your reply. Hopefully we can connect with Jeanmarie and gather ideas from one another. This is a very rural area and you are right, the schools and the churches are where people gather. The churches are thinkin of applying for the RWJF grant called Faith in Action to help get the hospice off the ground. I have been here 10 months and I will be leaving soon. My husband had a 12 month internship for seminary here at a Lutheran church. I am a 20 year hospice nurse and have been helping this group to start their hospice while I have been here. It is almost up and running, just a few more details. We hope it will be up and running by fall and this is why the Moyer's series is perfect timing. The contact person in Lemmon who is going to be the coordinator around the Moyer's series events is Julie Donner. I will have her introduce herself on this discussion board. We have talked about doing small group discussions in peoples home with the discussion guides prior to the series and then with a followup after the series. Facilitators from the hospice volunteers will invite friends and neighbors into their homes before and after. These facilitators would have some training to get the conversations going. We will talk about the suggestions of a Town Hall meeting, too. Thanks! Sue |

Sue, I'm so sorry to hear that you will be moving - particularly after all of the hard work which you've done to date! If you would like to stay in touch with the OOOT outreach effort, please send an email to moyersoutreach@bballard.com and subscribe to our newsletter. It would be a good idea to have Julie Donner do the same! You may be interested to know that Faith in Action is one of the members and leaders on the OOOT steering committee in my area. You can go to the Virginia board to read about the Clergy Summit which Faith in Action is having next month! Good luck in your travels and thanks again. Catherine

Hi! I'm finally joining this discussion after two months of pretty steady traveling around SD. I got inspired again after talking to Jeanmarie this afternoon. We (SD Public Broadcasting) will be doing outreach around this series and I will be contacting a wide variety of folks around the state to assess their interest and ideas for local activities. In the meantime, I'll be making a list of potential promotional activities we can do and outreach ideas. I was disappointed that we didn't have much of an opportunity for group discussion after viewing the videoconference in April. Technology sometimes fails us. But we will move ahead with planning. |

Elaine - I'm delighted to hear that you guys are so active! In states where there are PTV networks (instead of individual stations), it is really difficult for us to keep track of what's going on. Have you been working with Jeanmarie & Sue Wilford? Can you tell me if On Our Own Terms steering committees have formed or are forming? We've been asking steering committees to assign someone to post their activities and events on the web, but I'm concerned that there are probably activities going on out there with folks who haven't even "joined" the outreach effort (i.e. - who aren't on our mailing list). Could you ask all of your steering committees to sign up by sending an email to join-moyersoutreach@lists.lyris.net ?Thanks. I can't wait to hear more from you. Please let us know how we can help. Catherine

JEANMARIE: I JUST FINISHED WATCHING THE PROGAM ON PBS WITH TEARS FLOWING. I WISH THAT I WOULD HAVE SEEN IT A FEW MONTHS AGO. MY MOTHER WAS IN END STAGE LIVE FAILER AND COULD NOT GET A TRANSPLANT BECAUSE OF NO INSURANCE. WHEN SHE DID FINALLY GET ON MEDICADE, IT WAS TO LATE AND SHE WAS TO SICK. I WISH THAT WE HAD BEEN TOLD ABOUT PALLIATIVE CARE. I KNOW IT IS HOW MY MOTHER WOULD HAVE WANTED TO DIE. SHE WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR AROUND 50 DAYS AT THE END. I AM SURE THAT SOME OF THE TREATMENTS SHE RECIEVED, SHE DIDN'T WANT. WHEN SHE WAS FINALLY ABLE TO COMMUNICATE THAT SHE WANTED TO DIE, OTHER COMPLICATIONS AROSE BECAUSE SHE HAD NO LIVING WILL AND SHE WAS UNABLE TO RETURN HOME TO DIE AND DIED IN A HOSPITAL IN ANOTHER STATE. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF I CAN HELP PASS THE WORD ON TO OTHER PEOPLE. THANK YOU! PATTY [This message has been edited by PATTY BEHNKE (edited 09-11-2000).] |
