As you know, On Our Own Terms is a national program with a local focus. Several communities in Montana are hosting the leadership training videoconference on April 18 from 10:00am to 11:30, thanks in large part to the Montana Association of Health Care Providers. But we need to include more than health care professionals -- to name a few, we need ministers, counselors, attorneys, legislators, and people with stories to share about end-of-life choices in each community. We want to start a dialog community by community. What are we doing well, where do we fail? If you are interested in joining MontanaPBS in this dialog please contact me at chris_seifert@montanapbs.org for more Montana-specific information or post a note here for all of us to see. I look forward to hearing from and working with you.

Chris, I'm with Barksdale Ballard & Co, a public relations firm in Northern Virginia. I work on the On Our Own Terms consumer outreach and I'd like to suggest that you take a look at the list of Outreach Associates in the "read on line" version of the Leadership Guide on the OOOT website. These national membership organizations have been promoting the series and the outreach to their membership and they have been encouraging their membership to join local steering committees. It might make some sense for you to talk with some of their local representatives or contact the national organization directly. I know, for example, that AARP, Business and Professional Women, Employee Assistance Professionals, National Association of Counties and the Community Associations Institute have been vociferous in encouraging their members to join local steering committees.

Thank you for your input - we have just begun the process in Montana, but have contacted many of the sources you mentioned. There is a meeting in Bozeman on April 4 to organize the first of what I hope to be many local coalitions addressing this issue and many communities in Montana are hosting the videoconference on the 18th. We have a huge state to cover, but so many interested participants that I know the topic will be discussed in many different manners and forums! I am jsut excited about the possibilities.

Chris,

How did your April 4th meeting go? Has your committee decided on the activities it wants to initiate? Committees have been forming all over the country and the level of activity is really impressive. Let me know if we can help, and keep up the good work!

My April 4th meeting was not what I had hoped, but we do have some exciting efforts underway in the state. Great Falls (Peace Hospice - Kathy English) had a great community meeting earlier this month, Helena has another comunity meeting scheduled for the 25th, Kalispell has 48 volunteers ready to go, Billings has a meeting tonight - had great turnout - particularly wanting to share information to rural physicians about eol care, Butte (Easter Seals Hospice - Loren Hines)is holding a meeting the week of June 18 - they would like to involve their pastoral community more, Dillon (Berrett Mem Hosp - Barbara Landrun) is in the process of finding a new hospice chaplain and wanting to utilize the physician training from Billings, Glendive (Glendive Med Center - Bev Hellman) and I are going to talk to ministers about having a "special Sunday sermon" in August and utilizing the local newspaper, Bozeman (Deaconess Hospice - Jan Davies) will be working on community education workshops. As you can see, we are busy - and no two plans look alike! That may be the most exciting part. We are planning to have a live broadcast on the last day of the OOOT series (immediately preceding)highlighting statewide efforts. Lots going on! Thanks for your interest.

I finally figured out that we weren't going to have massive numbers at the beginning, but all we needed was a strong core group and I think we have that in several communities. Billings, for example, is focussing on community education and going to start some "talking circles" - they are also going to present some end of life trainings to physicians across eastern Montana using the Eastern Montana Telemedicine Network - and MontanaPBS is going to help defray the cost of extending that training to other areas of the state. I am thrilled by this possibility because physicians are sometimes difficult to access, yet they are an integral part of our discussion.
There is a meeting of the Helena group on the 25th that I am looking forward to attending - will keep you posted.
Feel free to contact me anytime with questions, concerns, plans, etc. email in Bozeman is chris_seifert@montanapbs.org or call me at 406.994.3437

Chris...I am responsible for coordinating the efforts in Oklahoma for the Moyers series and the Oklahoma Alliance for Better Care of the Dying. I am interested to learn how your project is doing. We had two sites on April 18 that participated in the videoconference. One group is on fire and is preparing to distribute thousands of Moyers brochures around the tulsa area. In the OKC area, we have a group that is willing to create a resource directory. We have spoken in numerous locations across the state to generated interest in the series. I am curious to know how much involvement do you have with the Missoula Demonstration Project and Dr. Ira Byock? He came to Oklahoma in April during our Palliative Care week at the Oklahoma University Health Science Center and spoke about his book and had a book signing. I am interested in your ideas for expanding the project. I would also invite you to visit our website at www.okabcd.org Patrice Brown, OkABCD project. My email: okabcd@okabcd.org

Hello everyone. This posting is to give you information about what we are doing in Missoula in anticipation of the Moyers series.

Our steering committee was formed just prior to the April 18 videoconference. Our group respresents both local hospitals, hospice, a pain management team, hospital chaplaincy, the Institute of Medicine and Health, the University of Montana social work department, the Missoula branch of the MSU College of Nursing, the RWJ Promoting Excellence in End-of-Life Care National Program Office, KUFM-TV, Missoula, the local parish nurse program and the Advance Care Planning, Faith Community and Schools Task Forces of the Missoula Demonstration Project.

Our committee has four goals: (1)Create broad community viewing of OOOT; (2) Increase awareness and involvement in end-of-life concerns among professionals; (3) Increase conversations about end-of-life care; and (4) Create momentum and sustainability of these discussions and educational efforts.

Currently we are working on a publicity plan that so far includes insuring that all local doctors, nurses, social workers and attorneys receive notice of the Moyers series. Additionally, all local faith communities will receive notice, as will business leaders. Different groups will receive notice in different ways. For example, doctors will receive a letter and flyer from a colleague. Churches will receive notice for their bulletins. Parish nurses will receive information from leaders in their organization. We are providing Discussion Guides to stakeholders now in hope that they will be educated and prepared to promote the series among their constituents.

We are also putting together a packet of information on end-of-life issues which we intend to distribute to people who call an 800 number during or after the series. The details for this process have not yet been finalized.

Several groups intend to buy videotapes of the series. One group of individuals on the Missoula Demonstration Project Schools Task Force hopes to use the videotapes as part of a workshop for teachers, to be developed later.

Our steering committee is in agreement in its hope to use the series as a catalyst to stimulate other activites later. We'll keep you posted!
