Young Opera: Eric Downs
Posted: May 12th, 2008

In this Young Opera selection, meet Eric Downs, a recent New York City transplant already singing his first role at the Met Opera in the recent production of Prokofiev’s The Gambler. Find out what he loves about opera and watch him sing “Vi Ravviso” from Bellini’s La Sonnambula with Chun Wei Kang on piano.

This is very cool. I love performances like this. Is there any way I can download this to my iphone??

  • Jennifer

    I love these opera pieces!
They are so beautiful – not only the music but the directing and filming of them. I love seeing NYC in the background!
    Great Job.

  • neil

very moving, lovely backdrop, great hostess

  • Merle Kramer

Great to have a little bit of culture and beauty. The idea for these snipits is amazing. Good job!

  • Richard

One of the finest young basses I have ever heard. Great choice.

  • Jenni

Eric Downs has an awesome voice and a strong presence. Hard to believe he is new to the Met. This video really did him justice – just enough editing to keep it interesting without distracting me from his performance. Visually and acoustically appealing.

  • Leonard G. Wymore

We are the proud Grandparents of Eric Downs and are thrilled to hear him via our computer. He natural talent and has worked faithully at developing his talent and love for Opera. Keep up the good work- Eric.

  • Dean E. Burton

As a person who does not sing solos, it is neat to have a cousin who can really sing!!! Way to go, Eric!

  • Vic

Wow. A real-to-life bass at such a young age. And such a believable view of the character. I hope that MET has much more in store for him, but with the change of management, who knows what will happen. The MET should snatch him up now, small roles for a few years, then leading to larger roles in the future. We can only hope.

  • Ken Meade

I just listened to Eric’s video and was blown away. What an amazing voice with such compassion and expression. I’m proud to have known his family for many years. He will definitely be a credit to any production at the Metropolitan Opera!

  • Kathryn Vanover

    What a talented young man!

  • Scott

Yes, he has a great voice. And oh soooo cute!

  • Basso

Having seen him perform and being unable to hear him I can only say Mr. Downs has a small voice of very little depth.

  • Thomas Jones

I just heard Eric in recital. Very challenging repertoire–Liederkreis, Ibert’s Don Quichotte songs, etc.–sung with power and great sensitivity, and gorgeous sound throughout his wide range.

It is so refreshing to hear a young bass who is not trying to push the tone and is so genuine in delivery and sesitivity. Way to go! It’s obvious that you have had wonderful training and that you “get it.” I Look forward to hearing more from you in the future! I really like these segments. Great idea.
