Meet Gerard Mortier, who planned to take over as the new director of New York City Opera next year and learn why he has become known as the “bad boy of opera.”
It was announced in the New York Times on November 9, 2008 that Gerard Mortier will not be joining the New York City Opera in 2009. Click here to read about the controversy.

I wholeheartedly agree with Mortier when he says at the end that New York is about to become, “the most interesting place for opera in the world.” If you missed his lecture at the Morgan Library earlier this month, you can read about it in my post on the City Opera’s website:

Very interesting. I had expected Gerard Mortier to be intelligent, but I had no idea he was so charming. This is good news for New York City Opera.
