Since 1976, more than 118 talented young musicians have been recognized with the Avery Fisher Career Grant Awards. Endowed by Avery Fisher, a lifelong lover and benefactor of classical music, the awards today are administered by Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Artists do not directly apply for these 25,000 dollar grants and have no idea they are even under consideration. Past winners have included Edgar Meyer, Gil Shaham, Sarah Chang and Joshua Bell among countless other talented instrumentalists. This year the winners were violist David Aaron Carpenter and pianists Kirill Gerstein, Yuja Wang and Joyce Yang. At the announcement in April at the Kaplan Penthouse in Lincoln Center, three of the four recipients performed. In this SundayArts Profile, pianist Joyce Yang wows with a rendition of Lowell Liebermann’s “Gargoyles.”
