Imagine a traditional theater—an empty stage surrounded by curtain legs which hide surrounding sound and lighting equipment. Then imagine all the people who operate this equipment—the sound engineers, musicians, lighting people, stage manager, moving silently but with purpose. Now imagine turning the whole shebang inside out.

You can’t fault the musical ensemble eighth blackbird, curators of the Park Avenue Armory’s recent Tune-In Festival, for lacking ambition. The program PowerLESS (one of four) had a listed runtime of three hours, but the evening lasted closer to four hours.

The Guggenheim’s Works & Process series has evolved into a commissioning entity producing some fascinating new work. Until recent years, it was more akin to a lecture/demo format, with a casual atmosphere where the dancers wore rehearsal clothes.
