Shen Wei

As a core member of the creative team working on the 2008 olympics, Shen Wei’s work was seen by billions around the globe.  But Shen Wei was already on the rise as a founding member of guangdong modern dance company – the first of its kind in China. But, he craved to know more about western dance than he could learn there.  In 1995 a fellowship brought him to new york, where he has lived ever since.

Shen Wei incorporates his skill as a painter, photographer and musician into his dance, it’s the movement he creates which is central to everything he does. Unlike traditional ballet where dancers seem to defy gravity — weightless as they jetté across the stage — Shen Wei’s work has been inspired by what he has seen in nature. He fuses a diverse range of art forms into an his dance creating a vocabulary of movement that is all his own.  Shen Wei Dance Arts will premiere an updated triptych “Re -1, 2 and 3” at this year’s Lincoln Center Festival on July 9, 10, and 11.
