Thirteen today announced on November 7, 2008 that Metropolitan Museum of Art Director Philippe de Montebello and network news veteran Paula Zahn will be co-hosts of SundayArts—Thirteen’s weekly arts showcase. SundayArts presents the work of emerging and established artists and performers, and provides an insider’s look at New York cultural news and events.  De Montebello, who is retiring as director of the Metropolitan Museum at the end of 2008, will appear with co-host Paula Zahn beginning November 9.

In addition to a feature performance or presentation, SundayArts offers several segments each week including “SundayArts News,” with correspondent Christina Ha, and “SundayArts Choice,” a brief first-hand, insider review of highlights from current shows and events around New York City.  In partnership with Bloomberg TV, SundayArts also presents segments of the award-winning Bloomberg Television program, Bloomberg Muse. SundayArts continues to expand its arts news coverage, behind-the-scenes interviews, and art world insights for its growing audience.

“Paula and Philippe are wonderful additions to Thirteen and the ideal hosts for SundayArts,” said Neal Shapiro, president and CEO of WNET.ORG, Thirteen’s parent company. “Philippe is one of the great leaders in the art world, with unparalleled experience and insight on New York’s cultural scene. Paula’s dynamic on-air presence, her exceptional career in television journalism, and her deep personal involvement with the arts make her a tremendous asset to this new program. SundayArts has been embraced enthusiastically by viewers and with Philippe and Paula as hosts, we will have even more to offer to everyone that relishes the outstanding cultural offerings of our city.”

When you take $$ from the Andy Warhol Foundation, you get hoodwinked by the likes of Jeff Koons! He, in turn, wraps his crap in the guise of “community” and “independence”. Art is not a communal activity. Communal art is entertainment. “Social Art” = propaganda. The art being produced today has not withstood the test of time. No judgments can be made on it’s value or eventual worth. Durability is the only criterium. Art is hopelessly entangled with commerce: a commodity. The artist speaking (pontificating about his work is as a celebrity doing a show) and I didn’t think you had this in mind when you started your show. Your show contributes to The Dumbing Down of Art. And it balks at anyone, even a PdM “explaining it”. Art balks at being translated into another medium - i.e. words. It’s the one place in our lives where there is no right answer. It needs only encounter with original pieces. And quiet. And honesty of artist and art viewer. Jeff Koons is laughing all the way to the bank, hoodwinking the ignorant and naive masses, by telling them that their tastes (for sugar candy and flashy duds) is perfectly fine and that he is making art for them — at no small price. Limited editions of froth that will be in the garage sales or the auctions of tomorrow, tricking the next generation and generations to come. This Kitch becomes “serious” when a lot of money is involved. Have a nice day.

I saw that your web site mentioned the San Francisco Ballet and the Nutcracker…referencing the 1915 Panama Exposition. did you all know that the very first transcontinental phone call was made from New York to San Francisco during this exposition? It was part of the film, “Hello, Frisco, Hello” with Alice faye.
