When Jackie O’Shea (Ian Bannen) and his old friend Michael O’Sullivan (David Kelly) learn that an anonymous resident of their small island hometown has won Ireland’s national lottery, the two, in the hope of befriending a millionaire, begin an investigation to uncover their lucky neighbor’s identity. When their search proves unsuccessful, Jackie pays a visit to the home of the only man with whom he and Michael have not yet spoken—Ned Devine.
Jackie finds Ned dead, sitting in front of the television, the winning ticket in his hand and a smile on his face. Believing that, under the circumstances, Ned would have wanted the money to be distributed generously, Jackie and Michael hatch a plan to deceive the national lottery and split the winnings among the residents of their village.
