Our
Savage Planet in the News
Organizers for Students
The purpose
of this lesson is to encourage students to learn about the different
kinds of natural events that affect our planet. Here is an organizer
for you to follow as you complete the lesson activities:
Activity One: Internet Research
The purpose of this activity is to help you develop some understandings
of different natural events. By reading and looking at the different
Web sites, you will be exposed to different perspectives. When
you collect your facts, choose those that help you understand
the event. Use the space below to collect your research facts.
Be sure to record your feelings and impressions as you browse
through the different sites.
Activity Two: News Broadcast
In this activity you will be asked to synthesize what you have
learned and present it in an interesting and informative manner.
The purpose of this activity is for you to teach other students
about your topic, as each group acts as the class expert on a
particular event. When you do this, you are able to monitor your
own understandings as well. Use the space below to plan your broadcast.
Activity Three: Rate the
Dangers
This activity gives you a chance to react on a personal level
to what you have been learning. Use the space below to describe
your reactions, and build evidence to support your ratings of
the natural events.
Activity Four: I Was There!
Use the space
below to write a letter describing what you have seen. This activity,
like Activity Three gives you a chance to react on a personal
level to what you have been learning.
