Q: What inspired you to make this piece?
A: I made this film as a graduate student at NYU film school. I had access to the camera for only a few days, and was all set to shoot a film on the New York School of Dog Grooming. I started recording some video research of the activities there -- poodle shaping, baths for pugs, etc., when they decided that the cameras were too much for the pooches. (Or, that I was really an investigative reporter out to uncover something wicked.) In the end, I got kicked out, and with few days remaining before my allotted shoot, I desperately sought a new subject in the bible of ideas, the Yellow Pages. I called The New York Doll Hospital, intrigued with the name, and luckily they gave me permission to film on the spot. I am grateful to them for their invitation, as the Hospital is filled with interesting stories and people.
