... with the moving image from other areas of art production. The idea that video or film is one tool of many toward the communication of ideas is intriguing. In a world saturated with visual expression, it's incumbent on artists to pick up this language, to begin to mold it and make it our own.
Q: How would you define "independent" film and video today?
A: Well, especially since I'm drawn to and moved by images that challenge categorization, the word "independent" is a bit tricky for me. I'm most intrigued by work that stands on its own terms and invokes dialogue about issues the work presents. Sometimes that work might be labeled "independent" film or video, or underground, or simply art, but it's the individual spirit that I find interesting. It may be narrative or it may be more non-linear, but it carries a distinct perspective and clarity of vision that one person or a small group can achieve.
