Q: What inspired you to make this piece?

A: At the end of 2000, I made a short video that relates a ticker tape parade in lower Manhattan as a storm of information overload. In this video, CURRENT, scenes of paper debris and billowing smoke from a freak fire seemed to prefigure the unbelievable imagery of 9-11. A year after I originally shot the video, its meaning changed considerably, as did so much else after 9-11. And so when the city realized the "Tribute in Light" memorial project, I was drawn to the intensity and power of the lights -- their presence in the city. Thinking about how my previous video CURRENT had changed, I wondered how this official reaction to 9-11 might change as well. Continuing my interest in what happens at the intersection of the natural and cultural, I decided to study the lights and try to reduce them to their essence -- no longer a memorial or a symbol, but simply an instance of pure light.
