Q: How would you define "independent" film and video today?
A:
I don't know if I can give a concise definition, but I can say that I like the dialogue going on between filmmakers, music video directors, and visual artists who use video as their medium. I think my value as an artist is that I am uniquely adding choreography to the discussion which is happening at a time when not only have computerized visual effects been affordable for a few years, but artists are now over the steep technological learning curve and are plunging headlong into its creative potential. The question is no longer, "how do we make this explosion look real?" but "how does time re-mapping, rotoscoping, compositing, 3-D usage, etc. affect mood and reinforce intention?" I was happily surprised a few years ago when I saw the music videos of Chris Cunningham, complete with special effects worthy of the latest Hollywood action film, at the Venice Biennale.
