Q: What inspired you to make this piece?

A: I kept wandering up to the BROOKLYN PROMENADE after September 11th. Almost every day I'd walk up there -- my own little pilgrimage. Over time the flowers died, candles left in memorial burned out, and the paper messages grew tattered. I guess in my own way I was coming to terms with the unspeakable absence across the river. I'd take the kids up there too sometimes and we'd talk about what it was to remember, what it is to die, what tragedy really means. These were difficult conversations, but I'm glad we had them; it was therapeutic for all concerned.
