Interview with JT Takagi |

Q: What inspired you to make this piece?
A: The horrific events of September 11th, 2001, brought tragedy to the thousands of families directly affected that day and pain and sorrow to all of New York City. Further tragedy ensued for thousands of Afghan civilians as a result of the war that followed, not to mention the families of American and other nations' soldiers sent to Afghanistan. On the U.S. side, post-9/11 news coverage, analysis and depictions of Americans' reactions seemed very skewed and narrow. Communities of color, especially immigrant communities, had a range of responses that weren't being reflected in the mainstream media. Certainly, reactions within Asian American and South Asian American communities in particular, and Muslim communities especially, contained a strong element of fear over the resulting backlash.
