The beginning of the flag bearing and waving, Union Square memorials, the pilgrimages to what became known as Ground Zero. I couldn't help but feeling as I was trying to connect with what happened I was also disconnecting or distancing myself from the actual event.
As the weeks went on by I thought the story was in the documentation of the wreckage. But during my first visit to the site I was stunned by the crowd's reactions. Some came to pray, leave notes, teddy bears, others bought t-shirts, pins, hats, pocket books and other flag paraphernalia from the numerous vendors. Some not only wore their souvenirs but also needed to pose in front of the wreckage with a policeman to prove they were there. This fascinated me to no end.
