Interview with Jay Corcoran |

Q: What inspired you to make this piece?
A: I remember going to Europe a few years ago and watching the BBC and how, a few minutes before the hour, they would air natural footage of world events. It was so refreshing to watch an event unfold with original sound and images without commentator spoon-feeding the audience with the correct thoughts they should be thinking. It's very hard to work that way in America, but this was the way I wanted to approach this material.
I didn't set out to make a "piece". I started shooting in the late afternoon of September 11 because it was the only thing I could think of to comfort myself. I couldn't make sense out of what was happening so I instinctively reached for my camera as soon as I got home from my job in midtown.
