Q:
Do you have any interesting and/or amusing behind-the-scenes stories about
the making of this particular work?
A: I came to New York to shoot the documentary in the winter of 1994. Only
now, I have found a U.S. channel interested in the final piece, by the way. As
you may remember, this particular winter was pretty cold, with temperatures
often well below zero centrigrade and heaps of persistent snow. My (New
York-based and Afro-American) cameraman Bobby Shepard, with whom I worked
together very well, made sure that we and our entire crew where present on
location despite all atrocious weather conditions. One particular day,
we were supposed to shoot in the homeless shelter at Wards Island, under the
supervision of a bureaucrat of the Mayor's office. The city was reluctant to
let us make the film, its reputation being at stake.
