Q: What inspired you to make this piece?
A: My grandfather had died and suddenly a part of my family and its history was gone with him. I felt I urgently needed to record for posterity the stories of my grandmother and the known history of my family. It was only later that I realized that their story was also a story of a long gone New York.

My grandparents always held a lofty place in my mind. They were the center of the family; we were their satellites and happy to be so. They had a mystique that attracted us to them and everyone else as far as I could see. As I got older and compared my seemingly drab life to theirs I wondered about the nature of the mystique they exuded -- or was it the mystique they wielded.
