In THE SPITBALL STORY, jazz greats Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Hinton, and Jonah Jones share their memories of an incident that took place in 1941, when they were working with Cab Calloway. The acclaimed film, by A GREAT DAY IN HARLEM director Jean Bach, centers on a particular solo performance by Hinton, who was playing a song Dizzy had taught him. When Hinton hit a few wrong notes, he was assailed by what he thought was an anonymously launched spitball that seemed to fly from the back of the stage. Cab, however, fired the man he claims was the perpetrator -- Dizzy. THE SPITBALL STORY, which proves that having an ear for music does not necessarily come with a sense of humor, was honored with numerous awards, including one at Sundance and another at the Telluride Film Festival.
