What inspired you to make this piece?
My inspiration for MIRAR MIRROR was the covers of major fashion magazines that define the American standard of beauty to be blonde and blue-eyed. Also, the sterotypes and myths that breed within the African-American community.

Tell us a little about the process involved in making this work.
Lots of research was involved, learning not only fashion lingo, but also those old wives' tales passed on from generation to generation.

Do you have any interesting and/or amusing behind-the-scenes stories about the making of this particular work?
Interesting stories? Well, for one particular scene, we shot on a grassy median, at night, in the middle of Times Square with the actress sashaying between traffic. The interesting part was the crowd of onlookers cheering on the sidewalk . . . mind you, all without a permit . . . probably more dangerous than interesting.
Is there a relationship between your work as a video/filmmaker and life in the New York metropolitan area?
Most definitely, the city forms a backdrop for the subplot of my films, taking advantage of not only the geography, but also the energy of the city.
How has the burgeoning independent movement affected your life and work as a video/filmmaker?
Well, it has definitely encouraged and inspired me analytically and visually. With independent films, there really is no formula or defined structure, and because of that, no rules bar.
