A look at the issue of domestic violence in the African-American community, this black and white film tells the poignant story of a young African-American photographer who must confront the abuse in her relationship. Ayanna is working on a photo-documentary about homelessness when she meets Iris, who is struggling to survive on the streets of New York City with her daughter after finding the courage to leave her abusive relationship. This forces Ayanna to begin to study why and how her relationship with Cadre, an architect, has shifted into a cycle of abuse. He has spent the last year struggling to have control over her life and their relationship. Through flashbacks, the film shows how two successful, young black professionals meet and begin dating, and then build a relationship that seems to be right out of a Harlequin romance. As the cycle of abuse begins and escalates, a confident woman begins to doubt herself and cringe in fear, and a secure, strong man turns into an ogre.
