Poetically, Salvo traces his "coming out" story to his mother and his family using a combination of footage shot at home in Venezuela and at home in New York City with his lover. The difficulty and fears that Salvo faces creates a sharp contrast with the happy family home movies -- images that no one wants to disrupt or break apart. Salvo skillfully displays this footage for us early in the film as an emblem of that "ideal" family scene. His loving attempts to explain his homosexuality to his family start with his mother. In respectful interviews, Salvo pictures his mother large in the frame with great dignity, shot from below so as to present her in a heroic fashion. She expresses apprehension and struggles with Salvo's life choice. But her love speaks volumes. In the end, her overwhelming desire is for his happiness.
