The awkward humor of this piece alternates with disquieting seriousness as Dan, the protagonist, displays his obsessive quest for a mouse-free apartment, ignoring his girlfriend, Joyce, in the process. While she raises the issue of pregnancy, he avoids the conversation by chasing the mouse, perhaps hoping to purge the household of other forms of life. Dan's heroic efforts pale in comparison to his cowardice in dealing with the pressing issues in his relationship.
