Q: What inspired you to make this piece?
A: I met a fireman by the name of Gerard Baptiste. I was walking a rescued pitbill and he invited us into the firehouse. He showed us all around and loved the dog. He told be how much he loved his job and was so proud to be in Manhattan. He had a very special quality -- and a kind of magic with the dog. We lost Gerard Baptiste on 9/11. He was 35 years old and a member of Ladder 9 in the East Village.
