Q: What films/videos and makers have inspired you or influenced your work? And why?
A: With DASTAAR my one artistic aim is to let the Sikh American community tell their story in their own words and imagery, making my filmmaking as transparent as possible -- an approach I associate with the early works of Errol Morris (GATES OF HEAVEN). I'm doing the exact opposite with my feature documentary on Sikhism, WARRIOR SAINTS, which I hope will be deeply personalized in the best sense. I idolize filmmakers who treat their work as a constant process of learning, from Robert Flaherty to Abbas Kiarostami and dozens in between.
