Q: What inspired you to make this piece?

A: My inspiration came from both my subject, Francesca, and my location, the New York City subway system. I see the interiors of the subway as a blank palette that people choose to fill up their time with however they like. Most people listen to their iPod and zone out. Others just sit there and stare into space. Whenever Francesca visits New York she always spends time playing "Saxy," her saxophone, in the subway. I decided to document her perorming and juxtapose the melancholy themes in her music with mundane, yet beautiful images of the subway.
