Interview with Jonathan Skurnik

Q: What films/videos and makers have inspired you or influenced your work? And why?

A: My early inspirations were Fred Wiseman, the Maysles, Pennebaker, and Leacock. These filmmakers innovated the technique called Direct Cinema, telling stories in the almost purely observational mode. But the films that most blew me away were Fellini's ROMA (not a documentary, but with doc elements) and Jean Rouch's CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER, which was one of the great inspirations to the American Direct Cinema practitioners. CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER then led me to Rouch's vast filmography of fascinating ethnographic films made with remarkable respect and sensitivity.
