Q: Do you have any interesting behind-the-scenes stories about the making of this particular work?
A:
I edited the film over the course of a year and a half. I logged the footage while on vacation in the Dominican Republic and I edited a first draft at the Ucross Foundation artists colony in Wyoming. The first version told the story of Eugene's last day at the job. But when I showed that version to colleagues, it didn't arouse much interest, so I started again. This time, I decided to tell a story about confinement and limitations and some of the frustrations of the immigrant experience. This version of the film was a success and because it suggests that Eugene will be trapped in that elevator forever.
