Q: What inspired you to make this piece?
A:
Eugene was the elevator operator in the office building where I had my production company, and over the years, we became friends. His face was so expressive and his story was so compelling that I kept saying to myself, I've got to make a film about this guy. One day, he came to our office to tell us he was leaving the job. He had graduated from the Hunter School of Social Work, taking night classes and would be working at a home for the mentally disabled as a night counselor. The next day would be his last. So I grabbed my camera the next morning and spent most of the day filming him in the elevator. I shot one hour of footage.
