Interview with Peter Sillen

Q: What inspired you to make this piece?

A: The city is always changing but in the late 80s and then especially in the 90s that change began to accelerate. Neighborhoods were losing their character as The Gap, Starbucks, and Duane Reade whitewashed Manhattan. People feel helpless to real estate developers but we can affect how our city changes and have to. Once an old block is gone, that's it. I wanted GRAND LUNCHEONETTE to make people smile but also experience a sense of loss.
