Q: What inspired you to make this piece?
A:
I was 14 years old when my older brother, Nathaniel, was diagnosed with a serious mental illness, paranoid schizophrenia. He was later rediagnosed as bipolar. I had no idea what either of these diagnoses meant, but they frightened me, and somehow it only made my brother's strange behavior seem even more serious and problematic than before the diagnosis. I was full of questions that no one seemed to be able to answer: Would Nat ever recover? Why did he get sick? Was his illness hereditary? Would I develop it? Over the years, I learned more about ...
