(cont'd.) REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS TO COME, about the work of French photographer Denise Bellon, are profoundly influential to me. In REMEMBRANCE, Marker makes a complex academic argument come alive, and his innovative use of archival material is a welcome departure from the usual historical documentary. I can't say SLUMMING IT is directly influenced by Marker, but it does explore the intersection of culture, politics, and history, which are themes that Marker interweaves into his visually rich films. My choice of a woman narrator is a nod to the excellent Alexandra Stewart in SANS SOLEIL.
