(cont'd.) My working process relies heavily on research -- before I even begin to envision the film as a film. I began SLUMMING IT by reading about New York vice culture, working-class culture, punk rock, theater history, etc., as well as first-person accounts of the Bowery from the 19th and early 20th centuries. This was crucial to my being able to imagine the physical space of the Bowery, which was really the starting point for imagining what the film would look like. I then began working with a historian who studies New York vice culture, media, and politics, Dan Czitrom, who agreed to be the historical advisor for the film.
