A: (cont'd.) discovered that there is a wealth of visual and written archival material, I was sold on trying to make it into a historical documentary. Discovering this mass of archival material also led me to some of the central themes of the film: the Bowery served as both an important place for the production of "authentic" working-class culture and a space for outsiders to act out their fantasies of what it meant to live in a working-class zone of "vice and depravity."
