	Q: What inspired you to make this piece? A: When I first moved to New York, a friend suggested I read Luc Sante's seminal book on the underside of New York, LOW LIFE (Sante is featured as an interviewee in the film). I did and became utterly fascinated with the many characters and stories of 19th-century "low" life in Manhattan. I saw the Bowery as the central character in this history -- the place where working-class immigrants and native New Yorkers came to express themselves.
