Q: What inspired you to make this piece?
A: One day, I was sitting in a cutting room and running a shot of a guy jumping off a diving board back and forth. I thought, what if I rigged a swimmer so while he appeared to be swimming forward, we were actually pulling him backward? Then, when we reversed the film and he appeared to be swimming forward, everyone around him (including the guy on the diving board) would be going backward. Sometimes, from little ideas like that, actual films get made.
