Q: What films/videos and makers have inspired you or influenced your work? And why?
A: I am inspired by people, life, and music, especially. I like films about real people with true life stories. I think Mira Nair and John Sayles nail it for me in their filmmaking. Kasi Lemmons did incredible work in both of her features and it was wonderfully fresh and new! I enjoy the documentaries of Stanley Nelson and other friends in my Black Documentary Collective and hope to see more black documentarians supported in telling our own stories. There are many lesser-known filmmakers here and abroad that I am truly in awe of and learn things from all the time.
