Q: What is the relationship between your work as a video/filmmaker and life in the New York metropolitan area?
A: Being a New York filmmaker is everything to me. I wouldn't have done any films if I didn't make the conscious decision to move here from Los Angeles, where I was being talked to death about why films with black dramatic characters wouldn't sell overseas and ultimately make money for the studios. That was the early '90s. ... New Yorkers are my crew, my cast, my inspiration. I love making movies here. Bigger budgets would be wonderful, but not if the material is compromised. And I have faith when I'm shooting here that it won't be.
