I'd venture to say that original and even subversive work could just as easily be produced by Hollywood (like Paul Verhoeven's films) as it is by the New York avant-garde. Now, with that off my chest, I'd have to say those that have inspired me most to make films, though I don't know how much of their influence shows up in my work, are the Kuchar brothers, David Lynch, Lynne Ramsay, Kenneth Anger, Roman Polanski, and my current favorite who can do no wrong, François Ozon.
