Q: What inspired you to make this piece?

A: I was inspired simply by an event that took place a five-minute walk from where I live in Brooklyn. Some dog owners I know witnessed the death of Miguel Flores on the ice in Prospect Park Lake. They tried to help. It was a miserable morning, sleeting. They didn't know who he was; he was just a bundled-up figure on a very cold day out in the middle of the frozen lake. He fell through and got out, but then fell through a second time and never got out. Why was he there? What were the repercussions of the events of that day? Who was Miguel Flores? What binds us together as New Yorkers and as human beings who all walk on the same uncertain ground?
