Q: What films/videos and makers have inspired you or influenced your work? And why?
A:
Cronenburg's early shorts that transform Toronto into a science fiction world. The Fleishers' early Betty Boop cartoons -- surreal, vaudevillian, racy, [and] capricious. Painters Philip Guston and Carrol Dunham for their use of difficult, semi-abstracted, often ugly characters as vehicles of existential crisis. Dan Clowes' "Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron" comic for [its] flow and surrealist story construction. Guy Maddin for his low-fi characterizations of place. Kubrick's A CLOCKWORK ORANGE for [writer Anthony] Burgess' language twists and the fabulous period antics.
