Q: What films/videos and makers have inspired you or influenced your work? And why?

A: Early on, my interest in filmmaking was linked to my interest in cultural studies. I was inspired by the work of Trinh T. Minh-ha, Sankofa, and the Black Audio Collective in London, who explored theoretical ideas and questions around culture and cultural identity within film. As I became more interested in narrative film, I particularly admired the work of Abbas Kiarostami, Atom Egoyan, Wong Kar-wai, Wim Wenders, Tsai Ming-liang, and Pedro Almodóvar. I respect how each of these filmmakers produces work that has a distinctive style, vision, and resonance.
