My Brother Nathaniel film & video features
about the work
Simeon Hutner's candid documentary looks at mental illness through the experiences of his brother, Nathaniel, from his first breakdown at age 18 through years of psychosis to his continuing efforts to cope with the condition today. The film, which relies on the voice of its subject to tell the story, is a poetic evocation of a life of exceptional promise completely derailed by mental illness. The work incorporates experimental elements to illustrate Nathaniel's unique perspective on the world as he navigates the course of his often debilitating condition.
