To the accompaniment of jaunty music, this film's hero, decked out in a white suit, proceeds along a New York City street. A vendor pushing an ice cream cart passes, yet there is something strange about him: he's walking backward! Thus begins THE EXISTENTIALIST, Leon Prochnik's playful commentary on fitting in. This 1966 film follows its hero through a topsy-turvy world where, except for himself, everyone and everything -- from a sexy blonde to a flock of pigeons -- moves backward. When the pressure of being different proves too much for our protagonist, he falls into step with everyone else, only to discover his attempt at conformity doesn't work.
