Q: What inspired you to make this piece?

A: New York is full of people using the city in unexpected ways to pursue their own interests. Years ago I noticed pigeon flying, and began hanging out on rooftops to look at the huge flocks of birds move. Watching trained birds fly around buildings is like watching the ocean, they move in repetitive ways and perform tricks that you can begin to anticipate but would never gamble on. The inspiration for this piece was to develop a way of seeing the city below through these flock movements. I realized later that what we were actually doing was making satellites, very unpredictable, low-flying satellites that would bring images of the earth back to us.
