Who is your favorite Dr. Watson?

Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson

In THE PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, the English actor Colin Blakely plays the role of Sherlock Holme’s doctor, John H. Watson. One hundred and four actors have played Dr. Watson on screen, including the director John Ford and Ian Fleming. Which actor’s portrayal of Dr. Watson is your favorite? Ben Kingsley in WITHOUT A CLUE and James Mason in MURDER BY DECREE stand out but Reel 13 Classics Host Neal Gabler calls himself a traditionalist with his choice of NIGEL BRUCE, who played Dr. Watson in 1939 with THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES.

James Mason!! Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes would never have put up with such a doddering fool of a Watson as was portrayed by Nigel Bruce.

Nigel Bruce and David Burke who played opposite Jeremy Brett as Sherlock in the early series on TV in 1985 at some point another Dr Watson took over when David Burke left. Nigel Bruce added a little more humor than some of the Watsons.

You don’t need a biology class to know MJ did not like females. He liked only young boys.

Nigel Bruce and David Burke are my favorite Watsons. Nigel Bruce as a little more humor when he doesn’t get what’s going on.
