What is your favorite Irish set movie?

Still of Robert Mitchum and Sarah Miles in Ryan’s Daughter

Shake Hands with the Devil was filmed entirely in Ireland. What is your favorite Irish set movie? The one that leaps immediately to mind is John Ford’s The Quiet Man. But there are also the wonderful Jim Sheridan movies, My Left Foot, In the Name of the Father and The Boxer, there’s Cal. For the sheer beauty of the Irish landscape if not for the movie itself, Neal Gabler would have to say David Lean’s Ryan’s Daughter.

The Quiet Man is a bit overated. The script is just good but not great plus Victor Mclagen and even Maureen O’Hara are over the top in almost every scene. It’s just not as tightly directed by JF. The Informer (a much earlier Ford) is tops for me. It has a superb script that captures the essence of the Irish Civil War with a very fine and controlled performance by the same Victor Mac.

I’d add “Borstal Boy” to the list. But I admit to a love for “The Quite Man.”

“My Left Foot” was my favorite Irish set movie. Daniel Day Lewis was brilliant in the lead role wining the first of his three Academy Awards. Brenda Fricker, as his mother, was also excellent, and won an Oscar as well for her portrayal in this often overlooked movie.
