Australian cinema exploded onto the international scene in the Seventies and has remained a considerable source of quality film since then, despite so much of Australia’s best talent being lured away by Hollywood. What’s your favorite Australian film? Richard Pena’s all-time favorite is Jane Campion’s amazing debut feature, SWEETIE. He also favors Fred Schepisi’s THE CHANT OF JIMMIE BLACKSMITH, which he considers one of the most powerful films on race.

I love Walkabout, a surreal film from the ’70s filmed by Nicholas Roeg about two kids – a white Australian and an aboriginal boy, stranded in the outback. Check out a trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fdqwbs8uKwQ

Okay, maybe Rabbit Proof fence or Romper Stomper.

I’d add “Summer of the 17th Doll” directed by Leslie Norman to the list.

Gillian Armstrong’s 1992 drama “The Last Days of Chez Nous”
